Online Survivor 7 was the pinnacle of OLS. Check the records page, and you'll see OLS7 all over the place. With 88% attendance, I honestly don't ever anticipate this game to be beaten. It is currently the king of all seasons. Was it the best season? That's up to you, but no one can deny how perfectly this game went.
Why did this game go so well? To be honest, mainly because this was at a weird juncture in my life. I had moved the previous summer, and after 3 or 4 months of travelling 30 minutes one-way to work every day, I got fed up and quit. I had no backup plan, so from January to May of 2004 I was, quite literally, a bum. I don't even think I left the house at all in those months. With no committments, I was able to focus 100% on the game. I was so into it, I was actually sending out day-by-day record updates, something I would never even think about having time to do today. In short, if you want to know why OLS7 went off so well, that's why, and probably no game will ever reach this level again (unless I decide to be a bum once more :-P).
Moving onto the game itself, this season pushed the envelope a ton. From mysterious puzzle pieces that allowed a tribe to unlock a 100 SP treasure, to looting the other tribe, to my own take on the controversial outcast twist (I'll let you be surprised on your own with that one), this season was the first time I really let go and had a twist-filled game. After all, I had plenty of time to plan it.
As for characters in the game, I should start by mentioning that for the only time in OLS history, everyone qualified. Actually, everyone qualified +1, so this was the first and only time I've ever had to make legitimate cuts. I made the cut based on who took the most tries to qualify, taking into account who had played the game before and how often. Ultimately, I had to cut Kholdstare4Sword. Sorry Khold!
Moving on to actual characters in the game, we should start by mentioning that Michael Fred 333 is SpiderFab4. He managed to pull off the first ever successful alias in the history of OLS. There were also returns by Yosh, Cybern, Clear, JU, and Logo. As for new players, keep an eye on Case, Buffy, and Ecu, as they will become regulars in future games. In addition to them, make a note of Elec, Cujoe, and Hill. Although they will only play one more game after this season, it's All-Stars, so you might want to get to know them. In short, this cast was amazing, and hardly anyone can be considered worthless.
As for as the episodes themselves, Online Survivor 7 continued the basic format of the previous seasons, but this time used the tilde ~~ as the character theme to mimic the ocean look of the pirate theme. The music theme for this season was Chrono Trigger. For some reason, the more and more you listen to Chrono Trigger, especially Frog's theme, the more it sounds pirate-like. The music for this season was truly epic. Anyone who doesn't get chills just listening to the main page's music (when nothing is even happening) doesn't have a pulse. Again, some music had become mainstays by this point and wouldn't be changed, but here's the recurring music in case you're wondering (by recurring, I mean plays in every episode except maybe 1)...
Main Page = Chrono Trigger - Frog's Theme (Remixed)
Recap = Final Fantasy V - Pirate Theme
Theme = Chrono Trigger - Frog's Theme
Tribal Council = Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Final Night
Voting = Chrono Trigger - Zeal City
Voteout = Chrono Trigger - Magus' Castle
Preview = Chrono Trigger - Schala's Theme
Last Words = Secret of Mana - Theme
One other thing needs to be mentioned. If Prince weren't a villain before, he certainly was after this game. Not to give anything away, but during the Final 3 Tribal Council, Prince signed onto the the person holding immunity's screen name, and attempted to vote out the opposite person. I received two votes at the same time, one for each person. Luckily, Prince's vote was plain text while the finalist's retained the font he had been using, so it was easy for me to tell the real vote. Evidently, the finalist had given his screen name's password to Prince at some point during the game, and Prince tried to use that to manipulate the game. A horrible thing to do, but since he didn't get away with it, it's funny now.
In closing, Online Survivor 7 is still the high point in the entire series. It was the first game to involve multiple twists, especially the major outcast twist about a third of the way through the game. The 88% attendance is also nothing to ignore. Great game, great cast, and great stats means this is a game that is impossible to hate. What are you waiting for? Get watching it!
