I don't know why everyone kept asking me to post the Host's Thread for this season, considering it seems no one is paying attention to the forums. By the way, you guys DO know you can create your own threads, right? lol
Anyway, Online Survivor 10 is quite possibly one of the best and most unique seasons in OLS in history. High attendance, lots of fresh twists, and even a prophetic event that would end up being the real Survivor's future. Its only negative is my fault. After posting two episodes, it sat in stasis for years, while everyone constantly asked what happened to it. After being the premiere game for what seemed like forever, it finally began re-airing, and will be laid to rest after what was an eternity.
This game did so well because of something quite ironic. All the people that announced retirement in Online Survivor 9 changed their minds after only one season, and Case (Cards), Ecu, Dampe, Superfan, Khold, Iam, Penguin, Lil, Clear, Dog, Bood (Gambluh), Prince (Pharaoh), and Mat all returned, making this almost feel like a second all-star game. Even among the new people, players like Rave, Fishy, John, and Big would eventually become mainstays, making this a true clash of all the greats in OLS.
Moving onto the game itself, this season was quite incredible with a plethora of new challenges. Many of the new challenges even took place over more than one day, cutting down on the no-event days considerably (there were only 4). Get ready for the freshest challenges in the entire series that would become staples after this game.
As far as twists, it would take me forever to go over them all, but suffice it to say the beginning and middle of the game are like nothing you'll see in any other season. The first three days were individual to mimic the real Survivor, but consisted of back-to-back-to-back Immunity Challenges and Tribal Councils, making for a crazy opening.
The Isolation Isle twist was not copied from the real Survivor 12 (just check the date). The idea came from when Janu was sent to an island by herself in Survivor 10. I thought it would be really cool if that were a mainstay at each challenge and would actually affect the game, completely unaware Survivor would unveil almost the same concept only two seasons later, albeit without the sterilization. [If I had only checked the real Survivor's episode title for Janu's exile ("Exile Island") I could have been even more prophetic.] Isolation Isle was a year ahead of its time, and would lay the groundwork for OLS' version two seasons later.
As for as the episodes themselves, Online Survivor 10 had a horrible color scheme when it first aired. This was part of the reason it went on a hiatus. When I started re-posting the episodes I fixed some of the color schemes, but on the whole I think it was beyond repair. Rather than spend another year trying to fix it, I decided to just keep posting with the color schemes already in place. Therefore, I apologize for the clashes, and promise I'll fix those problems for OLS11 when I start with a clean slate. Otherwise, there weren't really many changes to the page formats, other than listing people's a/s/l for confessionals and who all was present for secret conversations. If you have any other innovative ideas, let me know!
Before I finish this out, I really should mention a few memories of this season I have. First, my screw-ups with Case (Cards) and Prince (Pharaoh). Before the season even began and they told me their aliases, I warned them that it was not a good idea to choose an alias that began with the same letter as their real name. It was even worse for case since he started with the same first TWO letters. When you're already starting to type their original name, it just flows out without you thinking. Despite the warning, they said it would be fine. It wasn't, I screwed up. Listen to my warnings from now on, lol.
Second, a short note. The final week of isolation, the ability for someone in isolation to get out and back into the game was a last-second idea. It was never originally planned. I don't know why I decided to do it, but for some reason that last-second change will always stick with me.
Lastly, this one will take awhile. The finale was the most memorable finale in the history of OLS for me. The day started with a youth group activity with my church. We were to go to our pastor's house. We hung out and had fun, but the day was a bit spoiled for me since a girl I had a crush on brought her new boyfriend with her. I remember hanging out in the basement, just us three, contemplating this turn of events before I left. Rushing home, I quickly turned on GSN. They were re-running the Amazing Race episodes at the time and I was taking the opportunity to tape them. However, for some reason, they ran the wrong episode that night! By this point I was starting to get frustrated with the events of the day, and a migraine was setting in. I started the final day of OLS10, completely delirious. The migraine got worse and worse and it was all I could do to host the Final Tribal Council. When it got to a certain juror's turn (you'll know who it is), I told him to IM me when he was done, grabbed a pillow, and layed my head down on my desk. I awoke over 45 minutes later. Thinking that I had somehow missed the IM and everyone was surely gone due to my inactivity, I looked up, only to see HE WAS STILL TALKING. Luckily the nap had lessened my migraine, allowing me to finish the game, but it was one of the oddest days in the history of OLS for me.
Moving on, as for continuing traditions in the episodes, this season used the carat bracket {} as a theme to mimic the military theme of the real season (I thought it looked like a rank patch on a uniform). Also, the music theme for this season was Final Fantasy 7. I think the music for this season was a perfect match for the military theme. Final Fantasy 7 has some of the best, if not the best, music in the history of video games, and it's only natural it should be paired with one of the best, if not the best, season of OLS. Again, some music had become mainstays by this point and wouldn't be changed, but here's the recurring music in case you're wondering (by recurring, I mean plays in every episode except maybe 1)...
Main Page = Final Fantasy 7 Medley
Recap = Final Fantasy 7 - Midgar
Theme = Final Fantasy 7 - Airship (Highwind)
Tribal Council = Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Final Night
Voting = Final Fantasy 7 - City of Ancients
Voteout = Final Fantasy 7 - Broken Dreams
Preview = Final Fantasy 7 - Nanaki
Last Words = Final Fantasy 7 - Aeris' Theme
Quite simply, Online Survivor 10 is one of the best, if not the best, game in the entire series. You won't find another game with such high attendance, such new challenges, and such innovative and prophetic twists in OLS' past, present, or future. I can only hope I will some day once again be able to make a game this perfect. Please enjoy.
