Ugh... Online Survivor 6. This game was just weird. Nothing seemed to go right. From the way the tribes were divided, to the middle of the game which marked a horrible turning point in my life, to the end of the game where decisions that still don't make sense to me were made and the game had to be postponed, this game was just a horrible low point in a series that had been continuing to improve.
It was weird. 2 was better than 1, 3 better than 2, 4 than 3, 5 than 4, and even 7 than 5. However, for some reason 6 missed the mark. With only 61% attendance, it kind of started to go downhill. However, there is still alot to appreciate in this game.
Before we get into that, there are two memories of this game I must share. The first is probably the biggest event of my entire life thus far. When Online Survivor 6 began, I was a 20-year-old college student still living at home just outside of Reading, PA. I had lived there my entire life. Around the start of the year, my father announced that his job's headquarters were moving, and we would be as well. If you'll notice in the episodes, I mention a "Two-week gap". I had notified the contestants at the beginning of the game that I would be moving, and after Day 18 of OLS6 the game was put on hold for two weeks while I moved 2-3 hours away to Chambersburg, PA. This marks OLS6 as a major moment in my life, as I moved away from everything I had ever known. The only familiar thing that remained was this game, as it resumed on Day 19 from a brand new location for me.
The second memory comes at the very end of the game. By this time, I had established the 89-day game. However, if you'll notice, this game runs 97 days. Why? On Day 38, I was downstairs playing Super Metroid before the meeting. When I came up, my parents had the news on. I don't know how many of you will remember this, but on August 14, 2003, a major power outage hit the northeast, affecting New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and even the Great Lakes area. How could I see this on the news If I live in Pennsylvania? Simple, PA was the only state that ran on an independent power grid, so we were unaffected. I know, we're special . I signed online for the meeting and, sure enough, anyone living in those areas were not online. In the interest of fairness, I was forced to postpone the final two days until the power was restored, which ended up being almost an entire week, hence the 97-day game. Weird stuff.
Moving onto the game itself, this season was not very innovative. There were really only two major twists. The first was the division of the tribes. The real Survivor 6: Amazon had divided the tribes men vs. women. Since my game always lacks women, for some reason, that wasn't an option for me. The only other statistic I had to divide the tribes by was age. Therefore, it ended up being old vs. young. The only other major twist was the first ever real tribe switch, but that was nothing new by this point in the Survivor community.
As for characters in the game, there were returns by Spider, InX, JU, Frog, Dale, Ashton, Dampe, Khold, Chr, and Superfan. In addition, Sonic underwent a sex change (literally) and came back female under the name Z SymphonyX Z. ...I don't ask. For new players, oddly enough they all landed on the older, Tambaqui tribe. There's really noone at all to keep an eye on except maybe Bane, who would ironically return to OLS in season 17. ...Quite a gap.
As far as the episodes themselves, Online Survivor 6 continued the basic format of the previous seasons, using parenthesis () as the character theme to mimic the snake-like look of the flag. I realize that in 5 and 6 the keyboard characters weren't used in the transcripts themselves that much but rather the episode graphics. That will all change in season 7, not that you care anyway. The only other issue is the background color. At the time I didn't notice it, but reading it back that red background really screws with your eyes. I'm sorry.
As for the music, the theme for this season was Final Fantasy V. I know it's odd that OLS5 is VI and OLS6 is V, but that's how I discovered the Final Fantasy games. I'm not gonna lie, this season had some pretty bad music choices, but it's mixed in with some epic ones. After this season, the music REALLY gets epic, so enjoy crap one last time, lol. Again, some music had become mainstays by this point and wouldn't be changed for awhile, regardless of the theme. Again, here's the recurring music in case you're wondering (by recurring, I mean plays in every episode except maybe 1)...
Main Page = Final Fantasy V - Title Screen
Recap = Final Fantasy V - Fortress
Theme = Final Fantasy V - Ending
Tribal Council = Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Final Night
Voting = Super Metroid - New Brinstar
Voteout = Final Fantasy V - Game Over
Preview = Final Fantasy V - Cave
Last Words = Secret of Mana - Theme
In closing, Online Survivor 6 was a low point in the Online Survivor 6 series, but I'd still recommend you watch it. Why? Because alot of unexpected things happen. One tribe is completely obliterated in the tribal stage but still manages to rally back and survive, someone makes a move at the end of the game that will completely shock you and leave you scratching your head, and the finale will mark the first time something has ever happened. Be intrigued, and enjoy .
